Education

Post-secondary education University of Arizona: established in 1885; the second largest university in the state in terms of enrollment with over 36,000 students. Pima Community College has ten campuses. Arizona State University, College of Public Programs, School of Social Work, Tucson Component has for over 30 years conferred Bachelor's of Social Work (BSW) and Master's of Social Work (MSW) degrees to those who have earned them at their Tucson Campus. Tucson College has one Tucson campus. Brown Mackie College has one Tucson campus. University of Phoenix has four Tucson campuses. The Art Institute of Tucson has one campus. Prescott College has a Tucson branch campus. Northern Arizona University has a Tucson branch campus. Arizona School of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. Primarily, students of the Tucson area attend public schools in the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). TUSD has the second highest enrollment of any school district in Arizona, behind Mesa Unified School District in the Phoenix metropolitan area. There are also many publicly funded charter schools with a specialized curriculum.

In 1956, Tucson High School had the largest enrollment of any secondary school in the United States, with a total of more than 6,800 pupils. The facility operated on a two-shift basis while construction went on for two other high schools that opened within a year to educate children in the rapidly booming Tucson population.
